In
Healing in Memory of Sheba

For
the first year of her short life, Sheba loved
running, playing, jumping and just being an
ordinary wolf-dog. And she was one smart
cookie! Her favorite toys were anything that
squeaked. When she and her owner, Jane, would
play, Jane would tell her "no, I want this toy
or that toy", and Sheba would race back to the
pile and inevitably pick the correct toy and
bring it back.

Sheba loved to go, go, go. One of her favorite
destinations was the beach, running and playing
in the warm salt water and racing the waves. And
she'd always find a souvenir to bring back home
with her whether it was a stick or a shell.
Everything Sheba did, she gave 110%. She was
very fast and loved to run. Sometimes she would
want to walk 8 miles a day!
Sheba also had a human side to her. She loved to
sleep and sometimes she just didn't want to get
up in the mornings. She loved people and she
loved to give kisses. Whenever she wanted or
needed something from you, she'd gently nuzzle
you in an unobtrusive way to let you know. And
it was uncanny sometimes how Sheba could sense
emotions. She was almost like a sponge
- watching and learning. She was so well behaved
and quiet that she could go just about anywhere
with her master, Jane, even to local
restaurants. One time she went on a horse and
buggy ride in Galveston!
Sheba could be quite shy too. During her first
week of doggie daycare, she hid in the corner
until finally, Duece, one of the other daycare
doggies, noticed her reticence and enticed her
out of the corner to play. It wasn't long before
she made fast friends with Duece and her fellow
playmates. Duece became one of her best friends
and they'd share play dates.

Sheba was a beautiful wolf-dog with colorings of
gray, black and white. Her heritage was 29%
white German Shepherd and 71% wolf. She turned
all white on her first Christmas, except for the
beautiful markings on her face. And it wasn't
only her gorgeous physical features that grabbed
you when you saw her, Sheba also had a
mysterious look to her that told you with no
doubt that she was here in this short lifetime
on a special mission.
My first glance of Sheba was when she walked
into CenterPoint on New Year's Day with Jane. By
then, Sheba was a very ill dog, but you'd never
have known it just by looking at her. She still
carried herself with grace and dignity. Jane
had brought Sheba into CenterPoint that day
hoping to find comfort and healing for her
beloved wolf-dog.
The unthinkable happened
one afternoon while Sheba was outside in her
backyard playing. Someone, for reasons unknown
and still not known today, maliciously poisoned
Sheba. The vet said the culprit was anti-freeze.
The poison quickly entered her system and made
her terribly ill. It was touch and go for a
while but Sheba was a fighter. She had a spirit
that told Jane in no uncertain terms every day
that she wanted to live.
Donna and Ronnie, two of our Reiki Master
students, were at CenterPoint that afternoon and
were honored to be able to share their Reiki
healing with Sheba. Ronnie's animal totem is the
wolf and she said that working on Sheba made her
feel as if she were completing some sort of
mystical circuit with her own wolf spirit
guides. She knew she'd treasure that opportunity
for a lifetime.
Jane was astonished and
amazed at how much the treatment helped. It
prompted her to find a Reiki practitioner close
to her home in Kemah and continue getting Reiki
sessions for Sheba.
When Jane came to us in May as a Reiki student,
we were heartbroken to learn that Sheba had lost
her battle with the poisoning on April 14th. The
vet said that Sheba was a miracle dog. Any
other animal, he said, would never have lasted
as long as she did. Sheba had fought a long 4
month battle with the poison that would
eventually take her life, but her battle was not
without purpose. She was a miracle dog in more
than one way.
Thru Sheba, Jane commenced her own path into
healing. She saw the comfort Sheba received from
Reiki and decided she wanted to learn how to
share that healing with others and hopefully, go
on to help heal other sick animals who might
need healing.
The loss of Sheba also led Jane to seek out
other ways to honor her memory. Jane researched
the local area and found a wolf-dog and
wolf rescue in Montgomery, Texas called Saint
Francis Wolf Sanctuary. She began making plans
to contact the sanctuary and become a volunteer.
Jane knew that lending a helping hand to the
rescue and possibly even providing emotional or
other types of healing thru Reiki to the animals
there who have suffered so much would help to
ease her own grief.
Since that day, things have, well... snowballed
to say the least. Jenny, the director of
CenterPoint, agreed to put out a donation jar
for the sanctuary. Those who've heard about
Sheba's story and have seen her pictures have
opened their hearts and the donations have
started coming in.

Saint Francis Wolf Sanctuary provides a
permanent home where captive born wolves and
wolf-dogs may live out the rest of their natural
lives safely and comfortably with loving care
and attention. They do not breed, sell or trade
any animal that is in their care.
